The School Success Profile surveys have been in use for over 10 years. During this time the survey have been administered to nearly 50,000 students in nearly 1,000 schools and youth-serving agencies. These assessments address students’ beliefs about their social environment—neighborhoods, schools, friends, and families—and about their own physical and psychological health and school performance. The decision to assess multiple aspects of the student’s social environment came from the ecological theory that states that the current performance is directly related to the characteristics of the major environments of the child.

The School Success Profile is based on the research of, and developed by Dr. Gary Bowen, Ph.D. of UNC-CH and Dr. Jack Richman, Ph.D. The development, psychometric testing, and use of these assessment tools have been supported by a series of grants from the BellSouth Foundation, from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, from the William T. Grant Foundation, and from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The Elementary School Success Profile was developed under the leadership of Dr. Natasha Bowen, Ph.D., MSW. The project was initiated based on requests from practitioners of the SSP for a comparable survey that could be used with younger students. This assessment tool would allow school practitioners to identify problems that can lead to school failure and behavior problems. Armed with this information, they would be able to put into place proactive and preventative measures. This online tool was developed with Funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Strowd Roses Foundation, and Armfield Reeves Innovation Grants and a partnership with Flying Bridge Technologies.
